Why Your First Call After an Accident Should Be a Lawyer, Not the Insurance Company

After an accident, things move fast. You're in pain, your car’s a mess, and before you even catch your breath — the insurance company is calling.

They sound helpful. Friendly, even. But here’s the hard truth:
They’re not calling to help you — they’re calling to protect themselves.

That’s why I always tell people this: Call a lawyer before you talk to the insurance company.

Here’s why it matters.

1. Insurance Adjusters Are Trained to Pay You Less

Their job isn’t to make sure you’re okay — it’s to close your case as quickly and cheaply as possible. They might act like they care, but behind the scenes, they’re listening for anything they can twist or use against you.

You say “I’m feeling okay”? They’ll use that later to claim you weren’t really hurt.

You say “I didn’t see the other car”? Suddenly, they’ll argue the accident was partly your fault.

One innocent sentence can cost you thousands. That’s not a scare tactic — it’s the truth.

2. You’re Not Required to Talk to Them Right Away

A lot of people don’t realize this, but you’re not legally obligated to give the other party’s insurance company a recorded statement right after the crash — and you shouldn’t.

You have the right to say,

“I’m in the process of getting medical care and seeking legal advice before making any statements.”

That’s not being rude — that’s being smart.

3. A Lawyer Protects You From Day One

When you call me first, I help you avoid the common mistakes that can hurt your case — like waiting too long for medical care, saying the wrong thing, or accepting a lowball offer just to “get it over with.”

I talk to the insurance companies for you. I gather the evidence. I make sure your case is built strong from the start, so you’re not scrambling later when bills are piling up.

4. Early Mistakes Are Hard to Undo Later

I’ve had clients come to me weeks after their accident — after they’ve given a recorded statement, accepted a small check, or missed a critical doctor’s visit. By then, damage has already been done.

Calling a lawyer early gives you control. It gives us time to build your case right and keep the insurance company in check.

Don’t Let the Insurance Company Take the Lead — Call Me First

If you’ve just been in an accident, don’t make your first move based on what feels easiest — make it based on what protects you.

Call me. I’ll tell you what to do, what not to say, and how to make sure your rights — and your recovery — stay the priority.
